The shadow cast by the existing house guided the form of the new volume added to this traditional log home in the Laurentians. From this simple gesture, Shadow House was born — an addition designed to allow the owners to more easily welcome family and friends. Clad primarily in wood, the new addition introduces a warm, contemporary architecture that engages with the original house. The transition between the two volumes is fluid and harmonious, creating a subtle balance between heritage and modernity. Large openings bring in abundant natural light and frame views of the surrounding forest, reinforcing the connection with the landscape. As a secondary residence for a couple living in a major Canadian city, Shadow House serves as a gathering place for holidays and celebrations, as well as a peaceful retreat in the heart of the forest, away from the pace of city life.
